Taking cues from [Sigix] Technology, I've been able to vastly improve the
  efficiency and versatility of early energy weapon designs. Based on
  recent prototype tests, cooled variants of these weapons output
  approximately one-third of their previous heat during normal operation,
  and can be overloaded with a dual burst of energy for twice as much
  damage potential. However, use of this feature would have to remain
  situational, as there is a small possibility of severe negative side
  effects. Overloading a cooled weapon also generates three times as much
  heat per shot, but that puts it on par with the original design and is
  often worth the significant damage boost.
